Grant’s Pizza House in Rochester, Michigan, has been delivering and serving carry-out pizzas since owner Michael (Mike) Grant opened the doors — but his background wasn’t in restaurants. Before pizza, Mike spent nearly 20 years in the computer software industry, much of it in inventory and cost accounting systems for automotive manufacturing. That experience shaped how he would run his shop from day one.
“From a technological standpoint, it was clear to me that FoodTec had the superior architectural design that was going to last. I picked the right system from the start.”
Mike first discovered FoodTec in 2018 at the Pizza & Pasta Northeast show. With his background, he knew the importance of choosing a system that would stand the test of time.
One System That Does It All
For Mike, FoodTec’s all-in-one architecture was a key differentiator.
“Not having to have a separate website, a separate app, a separate GPS system for drivers — you have everything, and it all works. To me, that was just a slam dunk.”
Instead of piecing together “best-of-breed” software for different functions, Mike wanted one integrated solution. That decision has paid off in fewer points of failure, better data reporting, and more consistent operations.
“The FoodTec point of sale really acts as the hub and carries the load of about 90% of the shop’s operations.”
Inventory Accuracy — to the Penny
One of Mike’s non-negotiables from the start was tight inventory control.
“We do a hundred percent inventory every single week using your inventory module, and it does not take very long. We have the food cost to the penny every single week.”
That precision has helped reduce waste, prevent theft, and keep food costs consistent.
“When I tell my manager, ‘Looks like we’re missing 2.3 pounds of chicken wings,’ nobody thinks they can walk out with a five-pound bag and not be noticed. I’m going to know.”
Getting the Most Out of the System From Day One
Most operators ease into FoodTec’s more advanced features, but Mike implemented them immediately.
“I bought this software exactly for those features. We were doing these day one.”
That included full inventory tracking, costing, purchasing integration, and recipe management. His proactive approach meant FoodTec’s implementation team could tailor the setup to exactly how he wanted to operate.
Faster Training, Confident Staff
FoodTec’s intuitive design allows Mike to fully train new team members in about an hour and a half.
“Halfway through training, they say, ‘Okay, I think I understand where this is going.’ Then I hand them a stack of tickets from the previous day, and I can be gone for 45 minutes without a single question.”
For phone orders, Grant’s Pizza House uses Pizza Cloud integrated with FoodTec, so caller ID data flows right into the POS for quick customer lookup.
Exceptional Support
Mike credits much of his smooth operation to the people behind the platform.
“In my history of dealing with software companies, period, Alden (a member of the Account Management team at FoodTec) is probably the best inside rep I’ve ever dealt with. He has a feel for my business and knows when to bring things up or save them for later.”
Grant’s Pizza House shows how a pizzeria can operate with precision — without sacrificing speed or customer service. From inventory accuracy and theft prevention to fast training and a fully integrated tech stack, FoodTec has been central to Mike’s success.
